Job description
- Provide a comprehensive competency-based counselling program focused on the learning, personal/social and career/vocational needs of all students.
- To counsel students with learning, physical, social, and emotional problems, through one to one interactions held with pupils on the basis of Teacher, Parent or Principal.
- Work with teaching staff to identify and assess student’s needs.
- Refer students for assessment when appropriate.
- Help students understand their abilities, aptitudes and interests in light of the opportunities and demands they experience presently or may experience in the future.
- Consult with classroom teachers, Principal, school nurse as well as parents relative to students and their problems.
- Interpret objective data to classroom teachers, parents, and students.
- Work closely with classroom teachers in planning and implementing group guidance sessions based on the developmental needs of all pupils.
- Provide individual counseling in accordance with the standards of the school and in compliance with Makini code of ethics.
- Place and orient pupils to the school’s enrollment procedures and varied learning and cocurricular opportunities by helping pupils become aware of the curriculum alternatives.
- Participate in parent conferences pertaining to academic, attendance or behavioral concerns.
- Help pupils make appropriate choices of school programs and develop long range plans of study.
- Obtain and disseminate work skill and vocational information to pupils and parents.
- Help pupils cope constructively with the demands of the educational environment and attain satisfaction from their chosen curriculum and activities.
- Together with the pupil’s family and the school staff help pupils develop life interests and goals, appropriate social behaviors, and basic competencies.
- Work with pupils on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, peer relations, school performance, health and emotional development.
- Coordinate school standardized testing program and assists pupils in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data and works with pupils in evolving education and life plans in terms of assessment results.
- Perform liaison service between parents, teachers and pupils whenever this assistance is appropriate.
- Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of pupil’s services offered by the school and community.
- Participate in drug education program(s).
- Take an active role in promoting programs and policies which will improve the educational climate and opportunities within the school.
- Perform such other tasks and other responsibilities as the Principal may assign which do not conflict to a great degree with the counselor’s primary responsibilities.
Minimum requirements
- Registration with the relevant professional body/s
- Must have a practising license
- Degree in the field of Educational Psychology
- Able to convey or exchange information to the pupils, ability to persuade others in a positive manner.
- Ability to instruct, mentor and counsel pupils, confer with and advise parents, teachers, and children in order to develop plans for overcoming behavioral, personality, or scholastic problems in children.
- Ability to compare, compile, analyze and co-ordinate activities in prescribed form.
- Good Temperament skills-Be influential through motivating pupils to change their attitudes, have interpersonal as well as decisive skills.
- Provides support services to pupils, staff, and parents.
- Support services include referrals, counseling, assessment, diagnostics, and report writing.
- Additional responsibilities include may include pupil rostering/scheduling and maintaining individual pupil Education Plans.
