Job description

Reports to: General Manager
 
Job Purpose: To provide professional academic leadership, supervisory and administrative skills in Makini School which ensures its sustained success and continuous improvement.
 
Duties & Responsibilities
 
Strategic Direction and Development
  1. Create and communicate a shared vision and strategic plan that would inspire and motivate all stakeholders and reflect the needs of the school and its community.
  2. Give directions to the school to offer a suitable approved and diversified curriculum in accordance to circularized guidelines from the Ministry of Education and supporting organizations.
  3. Translate the vision of the school into clear operational objectives that promote and sustain school improvement.
  4. Ensure the school moves forward for the benefit of its pupils and their community.
  5. Motivate and inspire stakeholders to create a strong, shared culture of learning within an inclusive environment.
  6. Ensure that learning is at the centre of strategic planning and resource management.
Academic
  1. Determine, organise and implement a diverse, flexible curriculum and an effective assessment framework.
  2. Work with management to secure and sustain effective teaching and learning throughout the school and monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of pupils ‘achievement using benchmarks and setting targets for improvement.
  3. Ensure all pupils receive good quality education through a programme designed to promote a stimulating style of learning in a safe and healthy school environment.
  4. Monitor, evaluate and review classroom and assessment practice and promote improvement strategies, challenging underperformance and ensuring corrective action.
  5. Ensure implementation of innovative teaching/learning methodology.
  6. Participate in continuous assessment on the performance of professional academic staff and pupils in the light of set targets.
  7. Co-ordination of the internal and external assessments and examinations in line with Makini standards.
  8. Supervise teachers in preparation of comprehensive schemes of work and teaching aids in line with Makini standards.
  9. Establish creative, responsive and effective approaches to learning and teaching.
  10. Embrace a culture where all pupils can achieve success and become engaged in their own learning.
  11. Co-ordinate co-curriculum activities that reinforce teaching and learning activities.
  12. Co-ordinate and supervise class projects, field trips, official guests and other experiential learning activities.
  13. Supervise preparation of accurate and complete pupil performance records for discussion with parents, guardians and management.
  14. Co-ordinate parent’s meetings, Open days and other activities involving the participation of parents to enhance partnership.
  15. Implement strategies which secure high standards of behaviour and attendance.
  16. Organize regular staff and management academic meetings to monitor performance after every assessment.
Student Learning & Character Formation
  1. Lead and supervise Makini Junior school pupils’ guidance and counselling programs that will enhance individual learning and positive character formation.
  2. Facilitate high level consultative communication flow with the pupils, parents, teaching and non-teaching staff and the wider community.
  3. Ensure sound spiritual beliefs and core values are integrated in the learning process and way of life in Junior school.
  4. Maintain a culture of high level of self-discipline and work ethics among pupils.
  5. Lead in pupils guiding and mentoring in alignment to the Makini philosophy in giving a holistic education.
  6. Ensure pupils receive, understand and embrace school rules and regulations.
  7. Manage pupils’ behaviour in the classroom and within the school premises and apply appropriate and effective measures in cases of misbehaviour.
  8. In-charge of pupils discipline according to Makini policy and updated policy on school rules and regulations.
Administration
  1. Oversee interviews and admissions of pupils to maintain optimum levels in accordance with set standards and guidelines that ensure quality and optimum enrolment.
  2. Maintain adequate inventory, security and accountability for school properties in the Middle section.
  3. Ensure the school health, safety and occupational regulations are observed in order to make the school a safe learning environment.
  4. Prepare and approve the preparation of reports, records, lists and other paperwork appropriate for the effective administration of the school.
  5. Ensure that pupils’ medical cases are handled according to Makini policy and guideline.
Performance Managment
  1. Identify staffing needs and participate effectively in the recruitment and selection of the school’s professionals to maintain optimum staff utilization.
  2. Set targets and goals for the school’s professional staff through a participative process and develop strategies that will enable the school to achieve its objectives as agreed with the Directors.
  3. Ensure formalized documentations of all meetings with parents and teachers.
  4. Maintain the Head teacher’s logbook to capture each day’s happening.
  5. Participate in measuring and assessing staff performance against agreed Makini standards and provide evidence of whether or not the intended result has been achieved and to what extent by conducting appraisals both formal and informal.
  6. Participate in carrying out performance appraisals for staff in the school as per the school’s appraisal report.
  7. Encourage positive reinforcement by emphasising what has been done well so that in future it is done better.
Leadership
  1. Provide effective leadership that will create a learning environment at Makini that will enable each learner to realize their maximum potential.
  2. Participate in processing and resolving issues pertaining to parents, pupils and staff.
  3. Ensure the school maintains a cordial working relationship with other Makini schools and departments in pursuit of Makini mission and vision.
  4. Internalize, own and implement established school standards.
  5. Be a role model to the pupils and staff in every aspect of personal life physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
  6. Contribute to teamwork and co-operation among staff.
Marketing
  1. Participate effectively in activities geared towards marketing the school to ensure optimum enrolment and a data base for potential pupils.
  2. Contribute to the preparation of informational materials that reflect the desired image of the school.
  3. Sensitize staff on Makini mission, vision and core values to ensure that they embrace the Makini brand.
HR Functions
  1. Maximise the contribution of staff to improve the quality of education provided and standards achieved and ensure that constructive working relationships are formed between staff and pupils.
  2. Plan, allocate, support and evaluate work undertaken by groups, teams and individuals ensuring clear delegation of tasks and devolution of responsibilities in a manner consistent with their terms of service.
  3. Ensure a reasonable balance of work for teachers and other members of staff within the school.
  4. Implement and sustain effective systems for management on staff performance through incorporating staff appraisals and targets for teachers relating to pupils’ achievement.
  5. Coordinate the provision of necessary tools and materials required by staff for efficient performance of their duties.
  6. Supervise the master roll and ensure all employees in the school sign IN and OUT daily.
  7. Co-ordinate the preparation of leave and off duty schedules for staff in the school. Coordinate the same in respect of the staff with dual reporting relationship with other Heads of departments.
  8. Create a favourable work environment that fosters teamwork and best practise.
  9. Drive performance and encourage growth in talent and capability amongst staff.
Teaching
  1. Initiate teacher’s preparations of schemes of work and development of appropriate instructional materials especially teaching aids such as charts, maps, graphs and real objects. Have them displayed in the classroom to facilitate learning.
  2. Check periodically pupils’ exercise books, projects, and practical work, assignments and continuous assessment scripts to ensure regular marking and systematic use in guiding learning.
  3. Prepare yearly Schemes of Work in accordance with the syllabus and make lesson plans for all subjects.
  4. Plan, prepare and deliver lessons to a range of classes including putting up displays in the classroom.
  5. Select and use a range of different learning resources and equipment and essentially teach lessons on the school timetable to get to know what goes on in the classroom.
  6. Research new topic areas maintaining up-to-date subject knowledge, devise and write new curriculum materials.
  7. Undertake pastoral duties and support pupils on an individual basis through academic or personal difficulties.
  8. Ensure that pupils are adequately prepared, registered and presented for school-based continuous assessments and for National Examinations in accordance with the Kenya National Examinations Council regulations and syllabus.
  9. Prepare a schedule for meeting remedial demands for all the pupils who would need special academic attention and make weekly reports on the progress. Pupils with other special needs should be referred to people who can assist them.
  10. Quality marking of class work and giving immediate feedback to pupils.
  11. Ensure teaching and learning process is taking place in a clean and well-organised environment.
  12. Liaise with teachers in planning and carrying out learning activities outside the classrooms.
  13. Liaise with parents and teachers in addressing the identified academic, social and emotional needs of the pupils you teach.
 
Accountability
  1. Be accountable for the effective and efficient running of the school to the Directors and other stakeholders (pupils, parents, staff, and the community).
  2. Provide information, objective advice and support to the Directors so that effective learning and teaching standards are upheld.
  3. Create and develop a school where all stakeholders are accountable for the success of the school.
  4. Present a coherent and accurate account of the school’s performance in a form appropriate to stakeholders.
  5. Ensure parents and pupils are well informed about the curriculum, attainment and progress of academic issues and contribution stakeholders make to achieve the school’s target for improvement.
  6. Provide information about the work and performance of staff relevant to their job functions

Minimum requirements

Education & Work Experience
  • Minimum Bachelor of Education degree or its equivalent from a recognized University/Institution.
  • At least 8 years teaching experience 3 of which must be at senior level, in a recognised Primary institution.
